1. The legend of the Mid-Autumn Festival
Legend has it that Chang’e was originally the wife of Hou Yi. After Hou Yi shot down 9 suns, the Queen Mother of the West gave him the elixir of immortality. But Hou Yi did not want to eat it, so he gave it to Chang’e for safekeeping. Hou Yi’s disciple Peng Meng coveted the elixir and forced Chang E to hand it over. Chang’e swallowed the elixir in desperation and flew into the sky. It was the 15th day of the eighth month and the moon was big and bright. Not wanting to leave Hou Yi, Chang’e stopped at the nearest moon to the earth and lived in the Guang Han Palace for a long time.
Hou Yi was heartbroken when he returned home, but there was nothing he could do. So every year on the 15th day of August, he would go to Chang’e’s favourite garden, set up a joss stick and put on her favourite food, dessert and fresh fruits, to reunite with Chang’e in front of the moon. When the people heard the news that Chang’e had run away to the moon and become immortal, they all set up incense beneath the moon to pray to the kind Chang’e for good luck and peace.
