Zongzi can come in a variety of shapes and sizes, depending on the region in China and the local traditions. Here are a few examples:
A. Pyramid shape: This is the most common shape of zongzi. The bamboo leaves are folded into a flat cone shape, with a small triangle of leaves left at the top for tying.
B. Tetrahedral shape: This shape is similar to the pyramid shape, but the bamboo leaves come up to a point at the top, creating a more pointed and triangular shape.
C. Cuboid shape: This shape is less common, but still popular in some regions. The zongzi is made by wrapping the sticky rice and fillings in rectangular bamboo leaves, then folding the leaves over the top and tying with twine.
D. Tube shape: This is a longer and thinner version of zongzi, which is usually made with smaller bamboo leaves. The sticky rice and fillings are rolled up tightly and then tied at both ends.
Regardless of the shape, zongzi is a delicious and traditional food that is enjoyed by many during the Dragon Boat Festival.
2.How to make Zongzi?
The preparation of zongzi can be a bit time-consuming and requires several steps. Here is a basic recipe for making zongzi:
Glutinous rice (2 cups)
Pork belly (1 pound)
Salted duck egg yolks (4-6)
Dried shiitake mushrooms (10-12)
Green beans (1/2 cup)
Bamboo leaves (20-30)
Firstly, soak the glutinous rice in water for at least 2 hours. Next, soak the bamboo leaves in hot water for about 30 minutes, or until they become soft and pliable. After that, cut the pork belly into small pieces and marinate with soy sauce, sugar, and salt for at least 30 minutes. Then, soak the dried shiitake mushrooms in hot water for about 20-30 minutes, remove stems and slice thinly, and cut the salted duck egg yolks in half.
Meanwhile, in a pot of boiling water, blanch the green beans for about 30 seconds, then remove and set aside. To make the zongzi, take two overlapping bamboo leaves and form them into a cone shape. Add a scoop of the soaked rice into the cone, then add a piece of pork belly, a few slices of shiitake mushrooms, a few green beans, and half an egg yolk. Add more rice to cover the filling, then fold the leaves over the top and tie the zongzi with cooking twine. Repeat the process with the remaining ingredients.
Finally, in a large pot, boil enough water to cover the zongzi. Add the zongzi to the pot and boil for 2-3 hours, until the rice is cooked and the filling is tender. Remove the zongzi from the pot and let cool before serving.
