In northern China, there is the custom of eating salt dumplings we called Jiaozi every winter solstice.This food is made with meat and vegetable stuffing. While in Southern China, they eating the sweet dumplings we called Tang-yuan. It is Chinese sweet dumplings with Black sesame, Osmanthus or peanut.

 

Why the Northerners eat Jiaozi?

 

It is said that dumplings originated from the ancient “Jiaozi”. People ate “jiao’er” and drank “Quhan soup”.

They were warm, their ears were hot, and their frostbitten ears were cured. Later generations learn the appearance of “jiao’er” and wrap it into food, also known as “dumplings”.

 

Why the Southerners eat Tangyuan?

 

The custom of eating glutinous rice balls in the South during the winter solstice has been established in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
